With five days left before the 22nd edition of the FIFA World Cup raises its curtains, tailors are having a busy time due to the demand for flags and jerseys of different countries.
The flags, festoons, and banners of various countries adorn the tailor's houses in the Nilphamari district. Football lovers are coming from far away to order and grab the flag of their favorite team.
The national flags of various countries including Argentina, Brazil, Germany, France, Japan, England and Portugal are seen hanging in the Jahangir Alam's shop in the city, reports Bangla Tribune.
Flags of different sizes are being made centering the upcoming World Cup. “A few days left for the World Cup to begin. Therefore, I am making the flags of football lovers' choice in advance,” Jahangir Alam said.
Mosharrof Hossain, a supporter of Argentina in Domar Upazila, said: 'Whenever the World Cup comes, I put up the flag on the roof of the house. It has not changed this time either. I watch every game of the World Cup on TV.”
Shafiqul Islam, the owner of “Sathi Tailors”, adjacent to Haji Mohsin Road in the district city, said: “Whenever the World Cup starts, Football fans become eager to collect the flags of their favourite teams. Thus we become busy too in making small and big flags of different countries.”
Tailor Hamid Islam said: “About 20-25 people like me in Syedpur city are working tirelessly in making flags. We are selling flags starting from Tk60-Tk500. Apart from this, flags, that are being made according to the customer's choice and size, are being sold at Tk2,000-Tk2500. Argentina and Brazil have more supporters. Therefore, the flags of these two countries are being sold more.”
Tailor Pappu from the same city said: “Not only in this city, but our flags are also being sold in various upazilas including Nilphamari, Domar, Dimla, Jaldhaka, Kishoreganj, Taraganj of Rangpur district, Paglapir, Parbatipur of Dinajpur district, Chinir Bandar, Bhushir Bandar and Badarganj. Apart from this, jerseys of different teams are selling as well.”
Shahadat Hossain Saju, president of the District Tailor Welfare Association, said: "During the World Cup football, the whole world becomes crazy with football frenzy. Football fans take part in flag-pulling competitions in homes, shops, and businesses. Therefore, making and selling of the flags also increases.”
Nilphamari District Cultural Officer KM Arifuzzaman Arif said: “A few days left for the World Cup. Many have hoisted flags on the roofs of houses and tree branches. The love of Bangladeshi people for football is easily understood when you see the tailors being busy with making flags.”
