More flooding likely in Lalmonirhat; Nilphamari inundated

Water in the Teesta flowed above the danger level due to heavy rains

Update : 13 Jul 2023, 11:09 PM

The Teesta River at Dalia point may rise and the flood situation in the low-lying areas of Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts may deteriorate today.

On Thursday, water in the Teesta flowed 19cm above the danger level at 6am and 9am due to heavy downpours in India and heavy rains.

As a result, the low-lying areas along the banks of the Teesta in Jaldhaka and Dimla upazilas have been flooded. Locals said that water has risen in their homes. The danger limit at that point is 52.15cm.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) in its latest bulletin on Thursday said the Dharla river at Kurigram and the Dudhkumar river at Pateswari point may flow close to their respective danger levels, while the Surma river at Sunamganj point may cross its danger level for a short duration.

Besides, the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Padma rivers are on a rising trend, which may continue over 48 hours.

All the major rivers in the north-eastern region of the country, except for the Surma, are on a falling trend, which may continue for over 24 hours.

According to meteorological authorities, there is a chance of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the northern and adjoining upstream regions of the country in 24 hours. As a result, during this period, the upper Karatoya, the upper Atrai, the Punarbhaba, the Kulik and the Tangon rivers of this region may rise rapidly at times.

Meanwhile, as a result of the rise in Teesta water, the low-lying areas of East Chatnai, Khagakharbari, Tepakharibari, Khalisha Chapani, Jhunagach Chapani, Gayabari and Golmunda, Dauabari, Shaulmari and Kaimari unions of Jaldhaka have been flooded. The people of Tistapar have suffered. People living in char areas are moving to higher areas. Besides, farmers are in trouble with Aman's seedbeds. Banvasis are bringing poultry, cows and goats to the dam by boat.
