Another man killed in wild elephant attack in Bandarban

With the latest development, three people died in four days in the area

A 45-year-old farmer was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Lama Upazila of Bandarban on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Chingsathui Marma, son of Chingmou Marma.

The tragedy occurred around 10:30pm in the Fadurchhara area of the the upazila, said Md Shahidul Islam Chowdhury, officer-in-charge (OC) of Lama police station.

On Friday, two elderly people were trampled to death and another person was injured in an attack by a herd of wild elephants in the same upazila.

With the latest development, three people died in four days in the area.

According to local sources, Chingsathui Marma was going to his field from his house at 10:30pm. 

At this time Chingsathui Marma was attacked by a wild elephant, which got separated from its herd. Chingsathui Marma was seriously injured by the wild elephant at this time. 

Later, the locals quickly rescued him and admitted him to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex. Chingsathui Marma passed away at 1:30am while undergoing treatment.

Faitong Union Parishad Chairman Md Omar Farooq said people of the area are now in fear due to the sporadic roaming of the wild elephants.

Meanwhile Lama police station OC Shahidul Islam Chowdhury said that the relatives of Chingsathui Marma, who was killed in an elephant attack, have submitted an application to take the body without autopsy.

Lama divisional Forest Officer Ariful Haque Belal said arrangements will be made to provide necessary compensation to the family of Chingsathui Marma as per the rules of the forest department.
