The Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) arrested 10 suspected members of an organised gang on suspicion of helping Rohingyas obtain national identification cards for Tk1.30 lakh.

According to Police, five Election Commission (EC) data entry operators, two Rohingyas, two residents of Cox's Bazar and a dismissed school teacher were busted for their involvement in this work.

Deputy Commissioner of City Intelligence Police (West) Mohammad Ali Hossain confirmed their arrest in a press conference on Wednesday.

The arrestees are-Rohingya Kamal Hossain and Parveen Akhtar and five temporary employees of EC- Yasin Arafat, Noornabi, Mizanur Rahman, Farhadul Islam, Emon Das, a dismissed school teacher Shamsur Rahman and two Cox's Bazar residents Md Nurul Absar and Md Kamal.

"The NID cards were confiscated from Halishahar Housing Estate High School as some temporary EC employees tried to produce forged cards based on secret information," said Mohammad Ali Hossain, deputy commissioner of the City Intelligence Police (West).

According to the arrestees' interrogation, Shamsur Rahman took Tk1.30 lakh from the Rohingyas and delivered it to Absar, who used to produce Rohingya birth certificates using a variety of techniques employing data entry workers employed by the EC. They used to fake all kinds of paperwork, including Rohingya ID cards, he said.

Shamsur Rahman, also known as Shamsu Master, was the previous principal of Pokkhali Government Primary School in Cox's Bazar, according to Mohammad Ali Hossain.

After his involvement in forging NID cards for Rohingyas was made public, he was fired.
Due to his role in the creation of Rohingya NID cards, a case has been filed against him at the Cox's Bazar Sadar Police Station and District Office 2 of the Anti-Corruption Commission.

After filing a case against them, the 10 persons were arrested, the officer added.
