Cox's Bazar district administration on Tuesday said that more than two hundred villages in 47 unions are currently flooded by tidal water due to cyclone storm Sitrang.
At least six-seven feet of flood water has entered several areas of the district, including Kutubdia, Maheshkhali, Saint Martin's Island and more.
So far, at least 200,000 have been marooned in these areas.
In this regard, the Additional District Magistrate of Cox's Bazar, Md Abu Sufian, said that the control room of the Cox's Bazar district administration has not yet received the full details of the damage caused by cyclone Sitrang.
“The district administration estimates that at least 5,000 homes were partially destroyed and 1,400 were completely destroyed due to the cyclone,” he added.
Abdul Hamid Mia, chief meteorologist of Cox's Bazar Meteorological Office, said that cyclone Sitrang has now become a depression after losing its strength due to rain on the coast.
“As a result, the danger signal has been lowered from all seaports including Cox's Bazar. They have now asked to hoist cautionary signal number 3,” he added.
Cyclonic Sitrang crossed the Barishal-Chittagong coast near Bhola around midnight on Monday but weakened rapidly into a depression by giving precipitation, the weather department said in its latest bulletin on Tuesday.
Sitrang moved north-northeastwards very fast and crossed the Barishal-Chittagongcoast, and now lies over Dhaka-Comilla-Brahmanbaria and adjoining areas as a land depression, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
