Police declare war against drug addicts in Khulna

Awareness should be created mainly from the family to prevent drug abuse, says senior police officer

The Khulna Metropolitan Police has decided to conduct raids based on information about drug addicts in the city as part of its all-out campaign against drug abuse and gang culture.

The decision was made at the monthly Law and Order Committee meeting, presided over by Deputy District Commissioner Md Moniruzzaman Talukdar, at his conference room on Tuesday.

In his speech, Additional Superintendent of Police Tanveer Ahmad said that awareness should be created mainly from the family to prevent drugs, youth gangs and militancy.

Referring to e-cigarettes, he said, with time, new drugs are now available to the youths. “An all-out operation will be conducted to control drugs,” he added.

According to the law and order report, 27 more cases were filed in the district and the city combined in September compared to August.

Khulna Additional District Magistrate Pulak Kumar Mondal in Khulna district, 198 cases were filed in September, which is 13 more than in August. Moreover, 148 cases were registered in Khulna metropolitan area in September, which is 14 more than the previous month.

District Fisheries Officer Jaydev Paul said that 11 mobile courts and 37 operations had been conducted to stop hilsa catching amid a ban. This year, 1,300 tons of hilsa were exported from the Khulna region, and the government earned Tk142 crore as revenue.

Civil surgeon Dr Sujat Ahmed told the meeting that Sinopharm, Sinovac, Pfizer, Pfizer (child) and AstraZeneca vaccines were reserved for the prevention of coronavirus. Some 472 health workers were appointed to conduct the vaccination program.

He said that 100% of the people were given the first dose, 98% got the second dose, and 72% got the booster dose.

Chairmen of the upazila parishads of Khulna, UNOs, local Freedom Fighters, officials of various government departments, and committee members participated in the meeting.

Khulna Press Club President SM Nazrul Islam and BSS Bureau Chief SM Zahid Hasan highlighted the plights of the city people due to encroachment of the footpaths, illegal parking, traffic jams, movement of easy bikes, and noise pollution due to abrupt use of hydraulic horns.

DC Moniruzzaman said effective measures should be taken to prevent gambling and youth gangs in the city and enforcement of strict laws to prevent child marriage and violence against women.

He also directed the authorities concerned to free the footpaths and ease traffic jams.

The DC also gave necessary instructions to the respective authorities to conduct the Zilla Parishad elections on October 17 smoothly.
