Leaders and activists of the BNP on Thursday visited the home of Rajbari Blood Donors Club founder and Mohila Dal leader Sonia Akhter Smriti, who has been arrested on charges of spreading rumours about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on social media.
Afroza Abbas, president of Mohila Dal, the women’s wing of the BNP, went to Sonia's house in the morning.
Former lawmaker from Rajbari-1 and former president of the BNP’s Rajbari unit Ali Newaz Mahmud Khayyam, former MPs Newaz Halima Arli and Helena Jerin Khan, and Rajbari Mohila Dal President Shahinur Akhtar Beauty, among others, were present.
Afroza Abbas gave foodstuffs to Sonia’s children on behalf of BNP acting president Tarique Rahman. Besides, she also provided financial support for legal defence to Sonia Akhter Smriti in the case against her.
Earlier in the day, BNP Organizing Secretary Shama Obaid, Women and Children Rights Forum Member Secretary Nipun Roy Chowdhury, Rajbari BNP Convenor Liaquat Ali, Member Secretary Kamrul Alam, former general secretary Harun Or Rashid, Swecchasebak Dal President Mustafizur Rahman, among others, went to her house.
The BNP leaders said Sonia had been wronged, before vowing to support her.
They added that they would announce protest programs if she was not released.
In a raid in the early hours of Wednesday, the police arrested Sonia Akhter Smriti at her home in Beradanga under Rajbari municipality.
According to the police, Shamsul Arefin Chowdhury, science and technology affairs secretary of the ruling Awami League’s Mijanpur union unit, filed a case against Sonia at Rajbari Sadar police station.
According to the case statement, Sonia made false and defamatory statements on social media on August 31 to tarnish the prime minister's reputation.
