Police have arrested the Union Parishad chairman and ward member of Bahara Union in Shallah Upazila of Sunamganj have been arrested over allegations of raping a young woman.
Biswajit Chowdhury Nantu, chairman of Bahara Union Parishad and Debbrat Das Matbar a ward member of the same union were arrested from Sunamganj Sadar on Friday.
Shallah Police OC Md Aminul Islam confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
Police said that the accused were on the run and were arrested based on a tip-off.
According to the case documents, the two accused raped the 19-year-old young woman in the Union Parishad offices on September 16.
However, police claim that the two tried to molest her.
Local sources said that the survivor was in a long term relationship with Malay Das of the same union.
She filed a rape case against him in January as he refused to marry her.
After being released on September 15, he was preparing to marry elsewhere which prompted the girl to show up at his house.
Malay’s family reported the matter to local UP Chairman Biswajit who arbitrated the matter and sent her home.
The girls claimed that when she reached the UP office the next day, three people raped her.
The girl took refuge in a police station after fleeing the office and filed a case against three people.
According to OC Aminul, the third accused is still on the run.
