Four people went missing after an overcrowded boat capsized in Maiyar Haor in Sunamganj’s Jagannathpur upazila late Friday night while returning home after attending a kirtan.
The missing passengers were identified as Arun Debnath, Adhir Debnath, Hemendra Debnath, and Satindra Debnath, all from Bhabanipur village.
Locals said the boat sank due to strong winds and excessive passengers onboard. Most of the passengers managed to swim to safety, but the four went missing after being swept away by strong currents.
A rescue team from Jagannathpur Fire Service reached the spot on Saturday morning and launched a search operation.
A duty officer at Jagannathpur Police Station said police were heading to the scene and that the exact number of missing people could not be confirmed immediately.
