Chittagong Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mominur Rahman is being relieved from his post of returning officer over allegations of being biased over the upcoming Zilla Parishad polls.

The process of his dismissal is underway, Election Commissioner Begum Rashida Sultana told reporters at Election Commission headquarters in Dhaka on Sunday.

Mominur Rahman has been accused of violating the election rules by participating in special prayers for the victory of an Awami League candidate in the Zilla Parishad polls.

Earlier, Supreme Court lawyer Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Khan sent a legal notice to Chittagong Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mominur Rahman for allegedly violating the code of conduct in Zilla Parishad elections on Saturday.

The notice had also been sent to chief election commissioner, secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, secretary to the Election Commission, Chittagong divisional commissioner and Chittagong deputy commissioner.

According to the notice, on Thursday, Awami League's nominated chairman candidate ATM Payrul Islam went to the DC’s office to submit his nomination papers with several leaders and activists.

At that time, Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mominur Rahman participated in a special prayer with party leaders wishing the candidate victory.

On August 23, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the election of 61th Zilla Parishads in Bangladesh, excluding the three hill districts.

Zilla Parishad polls will be held on October 17.
