There is no shortage of fertilizer in the country and the BNP is spreading rumors on the issue to create panic, reserved seat MP from Jamalpur and Sherpur Hosne Ara said on Saturday.
She said that people should not be confused as the country has sufficient stock of different varieties of fertilizers.
The lawmaker said that the same quarter previously tried to create an artificial crisis of fertilizers and is now out to create anarchy through spreading false information.
On Wednesday, Agriculture Secretary M Sayedul Islam said that farmers should not be confused about fertilizers and must stop paying heed to roumours.
He said this at a virtual review meeting on fertilizer and irrigation situation at the Secretariat, attended by district administrators and deputy directors of the Agriculture Extension Department.
Meanwhile, a protest rally was brought out at Sharishabari in Jamalpur on Saturday where agitators alleged that authorities at Jamuna Fertilizer Company Limited (JFCL) had sacked 486 workers illegally.
They demanded that the workers be reinstated immediately and threatened of a larger movement otherwise.
Acting general manager of JFCL told Dhaka Tribune that the factory is not in production for the last two months, for which they had to lay-off the workers.
On Friday, local Awami League leader Md Sayedur Rahman was expelled from the party post for his alleged involvement in anti-government propaganda.
The AL leader had participated in a human chain that demanded fertilizers for the farmers on Wednesday.
Similar human chain programs were organized at different districts across the country including in Bogra recently.
Tulshichar Union Parishad Awami League issued a press release confirming that Sayedur was stripped off his post of AL general secretary for ward no 4 of the union.
On April 4, Agriculture Minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque told Parliament that there was sufficient stock of fertilizer in the country against the demand.
"The amount of stocked fertilizer is enough against the demand. There is no shortage," he said, replying to a starred question from ruling party MP Nurunnabi Chowdhury (Bhola-3).
The amount of stored urea is 475,000 tons against the possible demand of 70,000 tons in April, as per statistics.
Besides, the stock of TSP is 186,000 tons against the demand of 22,000 tons, while MOP is 341,000 tons against the demand of 21,000 tons and DAP 389,000 tons against the demand of 51,000 tons.
