A clash broke out between students of Kushtia Islamic University (IU) on Friday, after a student was assaulted for wearing a lungi on campus.
The clash left at least 10 students injured, sources at IU said.
On August 27, a student of the Law and Management Department, Hujjatullah Bhuiyan, wore a lungi to campus.
That day, another senior student of the Development Studies Department, Jahirul Islam Rinku allegedly assaulted Bhuiyan over his outfit.
On Thursday night, 12-15 students turned off the lights in the hall and attacked Rinku with sticks in front of Ziaur Rahman Hall and ran away.
In this regard, Rinku claimed Bhuiyan and his friend Al Amin of the Arabic Language and Literature Department, along with some other students assaulted him.
On Friday night, Rinku, along with some other students, launched a counter attack on Bhuiyan and his friends.
Faisal Siddiqui Arafat, president of IU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League, said: "I have heard that there was a fight between senior and junior students on the campus. It is sad to see them fight over wearing a lungi. We have resolved the incident after it was reported to us.”
IU Proctor Prof Jahangir Hossain said: “After Friday prayers, I heard that there was a chase in the faculty building. Later I informed the matter to the assistant proctor and security officers. The matter will be resolved on Saturday at the proctor's office.”
