Intern doctors and students of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital have threatened to stop all services of the hospital if those who attacked two medical interns were not arrested by 8am on Thursday.
The protestors made the announcement on the second day of the demonstration after blocking the road for one and a half hours on Wednesday, causing a severe traffic jam on both sides of Rikabibazar-Medical road.
Only those vehicles which were carrying patients were allowed to move on the road.
Hospital Director Brigadier Mahbubur Rahman Bhuiyan said the overall medical services are normal now.
“Several steps have been taken to strengthen the security of the hospital and the medical college,” he added.
On Tuesday, the interns suspended their movement around 3am and threatened to go for movement again if their demand goes unheeded by 2pm.
They again resumed their strike at 5pm as they said all the culprits were not arrested as per their demand.
Two separate complaints were lodged—one by the hospital authorities and another by the college authorities-- with Kotwali Model police in connection with the attack, said Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model police station.
Ajbahar Ali Sheikh, deputy commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, said: “We have already arrested two people and identified the others involved and they will be arrested soon. An additional police force has been deployed at the medical college to ensure the safety of the students.”
The arrestees are Muhid Hasan Rabbi, general secretary of Sylhet ward three of Bangladesh Chhatra League, and his associate Ehsan Ahmed.
Earlier on Sunday, two relatives of a patient misbehaved with a female medical intern at the hospital. They were later handed over to the police.
To take revenge, relatives of the patient entered the college campus and stabbed two intern doctors–Rudra Nath and Naimur Rahman Imon– on Monday night.
The injured are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Later that night, all intern doctors of the hospital suspended their services and announced to go on strike until all the attackers were arrested.
They closed all the hospital gates and took position on the main road in front of it creating a blockade.
