A photo has gone viral on social media that shows a man posing with a foreign-made gun after he allegedly attacked a UP chairman in Comilla on Thursday.
He has been identified as Moniruzzaman Jewel, a supporter of former railways minister Mujibul Huq.
After the photo went viral, police claimed that the Germany-made gun was a legal one.
Shahjalal Majumder, the chairman of Sreepur UP in Chouddogram of Comilla, was attacked and his car was vandalized when he was returning from a lunch invitation on Thursday.
He alleged that a group of men led by Jewel obstructed his vehicle and vandalized the car.
Jewel, however, denied the allegation and said he did not attack the chairman.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chouddagram police Shubharanjan Chakma yesterday said that they deployed additional police in the area following the incident. He added that the gun Jewel was posing with is a licensed one.
He further said the law enforcers were looking into the allegation of the attack.
Shahjalal alleged that the attack was launched since a member candidate, blessed by the former minister, could not win the UP election. He earlier came under attack several times.
Mujibul Huq has denied having any involvement in the attacks when contacted by media.
