People of several villages in Patuakhali and Chandpur celebrated the holy Eid-ul-Fitr on Sunday, keeping with the spirit of many Muslim countries including Afghanistan and Nigeria.
In Patuakhali, the main Eid congregation was held at Badarpur Darbar Sharif at 10am with the participation of more than 200 devotees. They offered prayers for the well-being of the nation and the Muslims across the world.
Maulana Shafiqul Islam Gani, the custodian of the Badarpur Durbar Sharif, said: "Whenever the moon is seen in any part of the world, we start fasting and observe Eid in keeping with it. It has been going on for the last 72 years."
The Eid moon was observed in different parts of the world, including Afghanistan and Nigeria, on Saturday evening.
Meanwhile, the Muslims from Sadra and Shamserpur villages of Paschim Barakul Union of Hajiganj in Chandpur also celebrated Eid on Sunday.
The Eid Jamaat was held on Sadra Darbar Sharif Madrasa ground in Hajiganj in the morning. The congregation was led by Pir Mufti Allama Zakaria Chowdhury Al Madani of Sadra Darbar Sharif.
Locals in Sadra and Shamespur villages said that they had started fasting a day earlier than Ramadan.
The people of around 40 villages of three upazilas in Chandpur have been observing Eid every year alongside the Arab countries.
