Police have arrested two suspected war criminals from Tangail, charged with killing intellectuals and genocide in the 1971 Liberation War.
Moniruzzaman Kohinur was arrested on Thursday from the district’s Gopalpur upazila while Alamgir Hossain Talukdar from Narayanganj. Both of them hailed from the upazila.
“Following their indictment for war crimes, the tribunal issued warrants for them,” Gopalpur administration chief (UNO) Parvez Mallik told Dhaka Tribune.
They have been charged with several counts of crimes against humanity, including the abduction and murder of local prominent writer Muslim Uddin during the war, he said.
According to the charges, Kohinur and Alamgir guided Pakistani troops to various villages to attack supporters of Bangladesh’s liberation in 1971.
On June 30, 1971, Moniruzzaman accompanied by Pakistani troops, attacked Jhawail Bazar and captured Muslim Uddin. They took him to a camp in Gopalpur, and tortured him for a week. The victim was later taken to an unknown location and executed.
The body of Muslim, who was the headteacher of a local school and a leader of the Awami League’s local unit, was never found.
