Receding water levels bring relief to Kurigram low-lying areas

There is no risk of major flooding in the region in the next two weeks, an official says

Water levels in Dudhkumar and Brahmaputra char area receded on Friday, marking an improvement in the flood situation in Kurigram's low-lying places.

According to the control room of the local office of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), the water levels in all rivers of Kurigram, except Dharla, are falling. 

As per its report at 12pm on Friday, the water in the Dudhkumar River was flowing below the danger mark by 5cm at the Pateshwari gauge station in the last 18 hours (after 6pm on Thursday).

Brahmaputra water has decreased significantly at the Nun Khawa and Chilmari gauge stations and is flowing 55cm and 61cm below the danger line, respectively. 

However, the water in Dharla rose a little during the night but stabilized a little in the afternoon and was flowing 39cm below the danger mark in the Setu point area.

Teesta water is also decreasing. According to the forecast, the water level is likely to decrease from Saturday-Sunday. 

There is no risk of major flooding in the region in the next two weeks, according to the forecast released by PWDB.

The disaster management branch of the district administration said that the water in the rivers is decreasing. The overall situation is being closely monitored. The local administration is distributing relief to the affected families in the ongoing situation.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saidul Arif said: “Flood situation has not yet arisen. The way the low-lying areas have been flooded is normal. There are reports of low water levels in rivers. Hopefully the situation will start improving in a day or two. We are monitoring the overall situation. Flood relief is being given to some of the affected families.”

Abdullah Al Mamun, executive engineer of the BWDB said: "There is no major flood forecast in the next two weeks.”
