Update : 21 Jun 2022, 11:45 AM

Ferry movement on the Shimulia-Majhirkandi route has resumed after 11 hours of suspension to avert any untoward incident due to strong currents in the Padma River.

This is the second day in a row that the authorities decided to stop operating ferries at night due to the unfavourable condition.

According to the Majhirkandi office of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), the currents on the river started increasing in the evening on Monday. At 6:30pm, the authorities decided to suspend the ferry services.

The ferry movement resumed at 6am on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, more than 500 vehicles, including passenger buses, got stuck in the Majhikandi Ghat area due to the suspension of ferry services.

Passengers, drivers, and vehicle workers had to wait for hours in the rain for the resumption of the ferry services.

BIWTC Majhirkandi Ghat Office Assistant Director (Commerce) Salah Uddin said: “Due to strong currents, the ferry service was suspended for 11 hours. We are prioritizing passenger buses and private small cars to cross the river keeping in mid the suffering of the passengers.”

On Sunday, a head-on collision between two ferries on the Majhirkandi route in the Padma River led to the death of a man and injuries of at least 10 others.
