The local administration in Bandarban is miking in different upazilas of the district to move the at-risk people living in the foothills to safer shelters fearing landslides due to excessive rain.
The Bandarban Municipality also issued warnings by miking in different areas to protect the lives and property on Saturday afternoon.
Mayor Mohammad Islam Baby told the Dhaka Tribune that heavy rains at this time of year cause floods and landslides, resulting in deaths.
He further said that 12 shelters have been set up in nine wards of Bandarban Municipality and ward councilors have been directed to supervise the overall affairs.
Lama Municipality Panel Mayor Mohammad Hossain Badshah said Red Crescent members have been urging people living in the hills or plains of the municipality to move to safer places and be vigilant.
“Besides, the municipality has also taken preparations to deal with all kinds of disasters,” he added.
Assistant Information Officer Khandaker Touhid said that miking has been carried out at various places of the upazila since Friday to evacuate the families at risk on the top of the hill and at the foot of the hill.
Besides, Lama Upazila Executive Officer (ENO) Mostafa Jabed Kaiser said that instructions have been given to keep the educational institutions open as shelters.
At least 40,000 families are living in the foothills of Bandarban district.
Every year during the monsoon season, people are killed and injured in several landslide accidents.
Road communication of the upazilas with the district also get cut off due to this.
