The government has deployed army troops to help Sylhet tackle its worsening flood situation.
Sylhet Additional Deputy Commissioner Anwar Sadat confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
According to the deputy commissioners of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts, five upazilas – Sylhet Sadar, Companiganj, Gowainghat, Jaintapur and Kanaighat – of Sylhet district and three upazilas – Chhatak, Dowarabazar and Sunamganj Sadar – of Sunamganj have been completely inundated by the second round of flooding.
In many areas, water has reached up to the shed of people’s homes. People are trapped in their homes due to lack of boats. The decision to deploy soldiers was taken to rescue the flood-affected people.
Sylhet Superintendent of Police Mohammad Farid Uddin told Bangla Tribune that the army would begin working on the rescue operation.
Saeed Ahmad Chowdhury, senior meteorologist at the Sylhet weather office, said there was a possibility of heavy rainfall in Sylhet and Sunamganj till June 20-21. Besides, Cherrapunji and Meghalaya in India were also likely to see downpours, he added.
