Another man injured in Sitakunda depot fire dies

He died while undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital

Another person has succumbed to injuries sustained in a recent fire at an inland container depot in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong.

Masud Rana, 37, died while undergoing treatment at the ICU of Chittagong Medical College Hospital at around 4am on Wednesday.

With his death the toll has risen to 44.

Masud used to load and unload goods at the container depot, said ASI Alauddin Talukdar of CMCH police outpost.

He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after the blaze, he added.

“The fire has claimed 44 lives so far. The bodies of 43 were recovered from the spot. Nine of the deceased are confirmed to have been firefighters.”

Dozens were killed and hundreds were injured in the deadly fire that broke out at BM Container Depot on the night of June 4.

Officials fear that the death toll could rise as many of the victims are critically injured and some people remain missing after the explosions.

Although the reason behind the fire has yet to be unearthed, Fire Service officials confirmed that they had not been informed that chemicals had been stored at the depot.

The fire was finally brought under control after around 60 hours, an army spokesperson told the media at 11am on Tuesday.

The owners of the depot issued a statement on the fire later in the day, expressing their “grief and sadness” at the incident.

Smart Group, the owner of BM Container Depot, said it wanted a fair and impartial investigation into the incident. 

“On humanitarian grounds, we have announced payments of Tk10 lakh to the families of each person killed in the accident, Tk6 lakh to the severely injured or mutilated persons and Tk4 lakh to those injured to a lesser extent,” read the statement signed by Smart Group General Manager Major (retd) Shamsul Haider Siddiqui.
