Elections in the future must be held under neutral management so that people can elect their candidates and bring them to power, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said yesterday.
The people of the country boycotted the 2014 national elections where 154 candidates were declared victorious without any contest, Fakhrul added.
He said that the election was rigged and people gave their lives in voicing their protests against the unjust actions of the then election commission.
The BNP leader was speaking at a programme to provide financial aid to the families of those who died in clashes on January 5, 2014 in Jagannathpur, Thakurgaon.

Two people died in Thakurgaon and another was injured in polls-time clashes in the district and the BNP has ever since been supporting these families, he added.
The BNP leader said that the consequences for the ruling Awami League government will be similar to that of the Sri Lankan government.
He said that the economy of the country is on the verge of collapsing and high inflation is on the cards.

Thanking Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader for his acknowledgement that ruling party leaders were indulging in graft, the BNP leader said that the AL general secretary had spoken the truth.
Corrupt leaders of the ruling party had destroyed the country’s economy by looting public money, Fakhrul said.
Quader on Thursday urged his party men in the AL to identify and make a list of corrupt AL leaders, saying that there could be no place for such people in the ruling party.

The BNP leader also called on Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi to resign immediately as he had failed in his duty to keep prices of commodities within the purchasing capacity of the general people. He said that the commerce minister and the government must share their failure and quit.
The current regime had turned the country into a failed one through corruption, nepotism and looting of public money, Mirza Fakhrul added.

Meanwhile, another BNP senior leader, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, yesterday told a discussion that the party would soon unveil the outlines of a united movement for the “restoration” of democracy.
"The BNP, the leading party of the largest alliance, will unite all through a statement centering on this idea (of national unity) and move forward", he said in Dhaka.
"Efforts are going on. We’ll present it before the nation at any time,” he said.
The BNP leader also said the party's acting chairman Tarique Rahman would come up with a call for waging a united movement soon in the absence of Khaleda Zia.
“He (Tarique) will present the outline of the future movement. We’ve almost completed preparations in this regard,” he added.
