Elephant trapped in canal rescued after seven hours in Rangunia

The elephant was stuck in seven-feet deep mud since Saturday, said locals

Forest Department officials of Rangunia upazila in Chittagong have rescued an elephant stuck in a canal for seven hours.

According to local people, the elephant had been stuck in the mud of Toila Vanga canal in Shilok union of the upazila since 5am. The forest department at around 12pm managed to rescue the elephant.

Local resident Nurul Alam said the elephant had been stuck in about seven-feet deep mud since dawn.

Hearing the loud cries of the middle-aged elephant, the locals informed the Forest Department, he said.

Masum Kabir, Rangunia Range officer of the Forest Department, said that the staff and doctors went to the spot around 8am on information and provided it with saline.

The elephant was pulled out of the mad tying with a rope and was later released into the wild, he said.
