At least 13 buffaloes died after drinking water contaminated with toxic waste from the Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL) factory in West Majherchar area in Chittagong's Anwara on Sunday.

Earlier, four cows died at the same place on April 14 and another 12 buffaloes died last year.

The buffaloes belonging to locals Mohammad Ilias, Mohammad Ibrahim, and Nur Mohammad died in the afternoon after drinking water discharged by the CUFL factory.

They complained that the CUFL authorities had released toxic waste into the canal on Saturday night without notice.

Later, locals carried the corpses to the factory's main gate, and demanded Tk2,200,000 as compensation from the authorities.

Touhidul Islam, a local Union Parishad (UP) member, said: ''Thirteen buffaloes of the area have died after drinking toxic waste water from the fertilizer plant. We have lodged a complaint against the factory authorities.''

Contacted, CUFL Managing Director Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman said that they were looking into the matter.
