Crops in four haors of Sunamganj's Jagannathpur Upazila have submerged after rainwater flowed over the embankments established for crop protection over the last two days.

Pailgaon Union Parishad (UP) Member Sahan Ahmed said paddy cultivated on 800 acres of land had been damaged in water.

Mirpur UP Chairman Mahbubul Haq Sherin said the haors, including Hapati Haor, which is one of the biggest in Jagannathpur, could not be protected from damage either.

The farmers are worried about the half-ripened paddy of the haors, Syedpur Shaharpara UP Chairman Abul Hasan said.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Shaukat Osman Mazumdar said Boro paddy on 45 hectares of land in Hapati Haor, on 15 hectares in Ahmadabad Hunda Bil Haor, and on 100 hectares in Bon Haor of Ramapatipur and Shewra had been submerged.

However, the extent of the damage was yet to be determined, he added.

On the other hand, farmers in Bishwamvarpur Upazila are cutting away the half-ripened paddy due to the risk of dams collapsing.

Meanwhile, during his visit on Wednesday, State Minister for Water Resources Zahid Faruk said that all individuals responsible for irregularities in dam construction would be held accountable.

Local Awami League General Secretary Nurul Alam Siddiqui suggested putting a stop to engine-driven boats from operating in the area to protect the dams.

Bishwamvarpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Noyon Mia mentioned that paddy on 5,496 hectares of land had been harvested.

He held out the assurance that the upazila administration was working relentlessly to protect the dams.
