A total of four Awami League leaders, including Jhilongjha Union unit President Sirajul Mostafa Alal, have been expelled for their involvement in the murder of a man in Cox’s Bazar.

Moreover, three others – Sadar Upazila unit Vice President Abdul Malek, Organizing Secretary Akkas Uddin and PM Khali Union unit President Arif – have been relieved from their posts in a notice issued by the local Awami League and Jubo League.

The three other expelled leaders are Joynal Abedin Hazari, Abu Taher and Abdul Maleque.

Victim Morshed Ali, a local youth, was beaten up and hacked to death in a public market in Sadar Upazila in a dispute over a government irrigation project on April 8.

According to sources, the accused threw Morshed Ali on the road and tortured him with sticks and hammers in Cheranghar Bazar area at around 7:30pm. Later, he was hacked to death with a sharp weapon.

At that time, Awami League leader Sirajul Mostafa Alal said: "He is being killed on the orders given by high-ups. Don’t even dare to come near him."

Jahed Ali, brother of the deceased, filed a murder case against 27 people including Mostafa on Saturday afternoon.

Tipu Sultan, the joint convener of local AL and chairman of Jhilongjha Union, on Wednesday said the decision was taken by the party as the image of the party was tarnished because of them.
