Hriday Chandra Mondal set foot on the premises of Binodpur Ramkumar High School after an interval of 22 days on Wednesday.
On his return, the schoolteacher from Munshiganj, who had been in police custody for allegedly hurting religious sentiment, demanded all involved with falsely accusing him be punished.
He voiced his demand while talking to reporters at the school.
Hriday said he has had a discussion with Headteacher Alauddin Ahmed, and plans to return to teaching in a week.
“But my family was attacked again last night. How will I manage to take classes if this continues?” he asked.
Meanwhile, a probe panel formed by the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education to look into the allegations started its work on the same day.
Government Haraganga College Principal Abdul Hai Talukder, the only member of the committee, has been asked to submit a report in five working days.
On March 20, in response to queries during a class, Hriday told his students that “religion is a matter of faith” while “science looks at evidence”, according to an audio recording shared on social media.
He said: “There is no evidence in religion. Religion in the end says God will take care of everything. Religion offers memorized words whereas science shows evidence.”
On March 22, two days after the recording was made, the school’s headteacher told the media that students and other people from the community were demonstrating inside and outside the school, calling for the teacher’s punishment. The mob also attacked his house with bricks and sticks, and hurled abuses.
Police took Hriday into custody, and later that day, an office assistant of the school filed a case with the police.
Hriday finally walked out of jail on April 10 after securing bail in the case.
Earlier, Hriday was denied bail twice—once on March 23 and again on March 28.
