An indefinite transport strike has been announced in 16 districts of Rajshahi and Rangpur regions demanding the release of a Hanif Paribahan driver, responsible for the death of 17 passengers of a microbus last year.

A Rajshahi court on Thursday rejected the bail petition filed for driver Md Abdur Rahim, a driver of Dhaka-Rajshahi route arrested after the tragic incident that took place in Katakhali of Rajshahi on March 26 last year.

He is accused in a case filed with Katakhali police station for negligence and reckless driving.

The strike was announced by Rajshahi District Motor Workers’ Union General Secretary Mahatab Hossain Chowdhury at a press conference on Thursday. He is also the general secretary of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Federation’s Rajshahi regional unit.

In a written statement, Mahatab declared that moved of buses, trucks. Covered vans, microbus and CNG-run auto-rickshaws would remain suspended in the 16 districts until the driver was granted bail in the case.

“Abdur Rahim’s family is enduring immense sufferings. We’ve observed different programs peacefully demanding his release. But it didn’t work,” he said.

The accident took place in Rajshahi’s Katakhali area on Independence Day last year when the bus collided head-on with the microbus, carrying 17 passengers, who belonged to five families from Rangpur’r Pirganj.

They were going to the banks of the Padma River in Rajshahi for a picnic.

As soon as the collision took place, the microbus caught fire and 11 died on the spot. The remaining six succumbed to their injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Relatives of the victims had to struggle to identify the charred bodies at the hospital.

Police said the Hanif Paribahan bus and the microbus both were traveling at high speed. The bus strayed on the wrong side of the road and fell into a ditch after the collision.
