At least 30 people were injured in a fierce clash between two villages in Faridpur over playing cricket on a land on Tuesday.
Locals from Algi Union’s Shonakhola and Baliachara villages began rioting by announcing the attacks through loudspeakers, said police.
Equipped with locally-made weapons, the villagers vandalized and looted several houses, said Bhanga police station Officer-in-Charge Selim Reza.
They also set fire to jute scaffoldings and damaged trees, he added.
Being informed by locals, Bhanga police and Fire Service rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Additional police and fire service members have been deployed to ensure the safety of the community.
Three of the injured were sent to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex, and the rest were given primary treatment by locals.
According to locals, some youths from Baliachara village used to play cricket on a piece of land owned by former chairman of Algi Union Parishad Kauser Bhuiyan at Monohora village.
However, some people from Shonakhola village asked them not to play there anymore.
Last week, some unidentified youths from Shonakhola village attacked Miraj, Al-Amin, Saeed, and Nayeem from Baliachara village when they went to play cricket on that land again. They were rescued and sent to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex.
An arbitration was supposed to take place for a settlement, but locals took the matter in their hands.
Medical Officer Dr Mouli Chowdhury of Bhanga Upazila Health Complex said, among the three injured, one was referred to Faridpur Trauma Centre from the hospital, and another was released after primary treatment.
