Selina Hayat Ivy has said she will secure her third term as mayor of the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) if the election is free and fair.
The incumbent mayor made the remarks after casting her vote in the NCC polls at the Deobogh Sishubag Government Primary School polling centre at around 11am on Sunday.
“I am optimistic about winning. However, I will accept whatever the outcome of the election is,” she told reporters outside the voting station.
She also urged law enforcers to stay alert and prevent any untoward incidents centring the polls.
“Till now balloting for the election is going on peacefully and I request the law enforcing agencies to provide their assistance so that people can cast their vote. If votes are cast neutrally then I am 100% sure of winning the election as I have a deep relation with the people of Narayanganj,” she said.
She said she is hopeful of victory and sought assistance from the law enforcing agencies to hold a free and fair election.
About the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs), Ivy said “As the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) is new so voters are taking a bit more time to cast their votes.”
Voters in the city started casting votes to decide whether Selina Hayat Ivy will continue as mayor for a third term or Taimur Alam Khandakar will replace her.
The voting began at 8am in 192 polling centres in 27 wards of the city and will continue till 4pm without a break.
The constituency has a total of 517,362 registered voters – 259,846 men, 257,511 women and four people from third gender communities who will exercise their voting rights at 1333 polling booths in 192 centres.
Apart from choosing the mayors, voters are also stamping ballots for the posts of nine reserved women councillors and 27 councillors.
Seven candidates are contesting in the mayoral race, while 148 candidates will contest in general councillor posts. Moreover, 34 aspirants will contest for the reserved councillor seats for women.
The election is taking place amid the pandemic but adhering to the health safety guidelines issued by the government to prevent a further surge in Covid-19 cases.
