A 35-year old woman has been diagnosed with Mucormycosis, or ‘black fungus’ on Saturday, the third case detected in Chittagong.
“The patient was diagnosed with it even though she did not contract Covid-19.She is being treated under the medicine department. She also suffers from diabetes,” said Dr Sujat Pal, head of Medicine at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

The last reported case of black fungus was back in August. So far, three cases have been detected in Chittagong. The first patient to be diagnosed with it has recovered and been discharged from the hospital.
Mucormycosis has a fatality rate of 54%. It affects the sinuses, the brain, and the lungs, and it can be fatal in diabetics or people who are seriously immune-compromised, such as cancer, HIV-Aids or Covid-19 patients.
The disease made headlines back in May, with more than 10,000 reported cases from India.
