Incessant rain caused by the low pressure in the Bay of Bengal has flooded several upazilas of Bagerhat district.
The floods have left around 50,000 families marooned and swept away shrimps and fishes from 5,000 enclosures.
Several unpaved roads of different areas, including Bagerhat municipality and sadar upazila, were also submerged in the rain. Vegetables have also been severely damaged.
Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Azizur Rahman said the ceaseless rains had inundated several areas in Sarankhola, Morrelganj, Rampal, Mongla and Sadar upazilas.
Khokon of Rampal upazila said: "Our house and fish enclosures have been flooded due to the rain. Vegetables have also been severely damaged.”
Shariful Islam of the same upazila said: “Many houses in our area have been submerged due to continuous rainfall. Many trees have been uprooted.”
As DC Muhammad Azizur Rahman put it: “We have started distributing dry food and food items among the waterlogged families. Upazila Nirbahi officials have been directed to provide all kinds of assistance to the flood-hit families.”

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Sarankhola Khatune Jannat distributed dry food among the waterlogged people in the upazila.
She said local people's representatives had been asked to take necessary steps to drain the water in the locality.
Abdul Baki Talukder, councilor of ward 6 of Bagerhat municipality and finance secretary of the district Awami League, also distributed dry food among the flood-hit families.
The food was distributed under the direction of Sheikh Tanmoy, MP of Bagerhat-2 constituency.
Rampal Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Sheikh Asaduzzaman said heavy rainfall had caused severe damage to fish resources in Rampal, which might amount to Tk38,050,000, according to preliminary data.
The extent of the losses might increase further, warned the fisheries officer.
Khulna Fisheries Department Assistant Director Raj Kumar Biswas said white fish fry, shrimp fry and crab farms in Bagerhat had been severely damaged. Shrimps on 5,000 farms had been washed away.
Initially, the damage had been estimated at Tk111,300,000, he added.
