As part of the government’s election pledge to plant 2.5 billion trees in five years, Bagerhat Road Division has officially inaugurated its tree plantation program.
T drive was inaugurated along the Barisal–Jhalokathi–Pirojpur–Bagerhat–Khulna highway on Wednesday.
Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner Golam Mohammad Baten formally inaugurated the program. The event was chaired by Mohammad Ashraful Islam Prang, Executive Engineer of the Bagerhat Road Division. Among the speakers were Superintendent of Police Mohammad Hasan Chowdhury, former chairman of Satgumbuz Union Parishad Fakir Tarikul Islam, and other officials of the Road Division, including Assistant Engineers Mohammad Tariqul Islam, Mohammad Billal Hossain, Mohammad Abdur Rahim, Faisal Ahmed, and Mohammad Mominul Islam, said a press release.
During the event, the speakers emphasized the dual benefits of the initiative. Properly planned tree plantation along national highways not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the roads but also contributes significantly to environmental sustainability. It helps maintain ecological balance, reduces the adverse effects of climate change, and increases road safety by providing shade and reducing dust and air pollution.
The plantation drive will continue along various stretches of the N-807 highway, ensuring a greener and safer corridor connecting Barishal, Jhalokathi, Pirojpur, Bagerhat, and Khulna. Officials expressed optimism that this initiative will be expanded further in the coming years to cover more areas and involve local communities.
Students from local schools, along with officials from the Roads and Highways Department and the Road Transport and Highways Division, participated in the program, reflecting the importance of collective efforts in environmental protection.
