Rajshahi city under week-long lockdown from Friday

Divisional Commissioner Dr Humayun Kabir makes the announcement after an emergency meeting on June 10

In light of the deteriorating Covid-19 situation, the authorities have declared an all-out lockdown in Rajshahi metropolitan area for a week, starting from Friday evening. 

Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Dr Humayun Kabir announced the decision after an emergency meeting on the pandemic situation, held at the district circuit house on Thursday night. 

Per the decision, the city will be under lockdown from 5pm Friday till June 17 midnight.

At least 12 people died from Covid in the past 24 hours till Thursday morning at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital alone.

“We analyzed the trend of new cases for the past few days and found that the daily infection rate has been rising,” the divisional commissioner told reporters after the meeting.  

Shops, malls, restaurants will be closed during the lockdown, but dispensaries and emergency service providers would be allowed to operate.

Public transport will not be allowed to ply the city streets. However, vehicles carrying foods, goods and emergency products will remain out of the purview of the lockdown. 

Asked why the lockdown starts at 5pm, the divisional commissioner said they chose the time so the outsiders could leave the city by then.
