A fish trader has moved a Khulna court by submitting a plea for the acceptance of a defamation case against bdnews24.com for not taking down previous news reports involving former lawmaker HBM Iqbal and his family members.
He sought to bring charges against the online news portal’s Editor-in-Chief Toufique Imrose Khalidi and three other top editors.
Abdullah Al Mamun moved the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shahidul Islam over a Tk1,000 crore defamation suit on March 10, the complainant himself confirmed.
Upon receiving the complaint, the magistrate tasked the Police Bureau of Investigation with looking into the matter and fixed July 6 for hearing.
When contacted, Mamun, however, declined to comment on the allegation on the ground that the matter was sub-judice.
On March 14, a Barisal court rejected a similar plea for a defamation suit filed against the same four people for refusing to remove old reports against the former Awami League MP from Dhaka-10 constituency and his family.
Earlier, at a press conference on February 17, the bdnews24.com authorities accused HBM Iqbal of exerting pressure on them to take down the reports published on and related to him from 2007 and till the present.
