Return of 'murdered' girl: Police press charges against 3

Narayanganj CID said the case investigation found that the girl was raped after being abducted

Update : 23 Mar 2021, 12:31 PM

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) submitted a charge sheet in the case of the return of an allegedly murdered schoolgirl in Narayanganj.

In the document, the CID accused three people including the key accused Md Abdullah and appealed that boatman Khalilur Rahman be dismissed from the case.

The charge sheet was submitted to the Narayanganj Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court on March 16, confirmed Narayanganj Court Police Inspector Md Asaduzzaman, adding that the court had fixed April 29 for the next hearing.

The three accused are Md Abdullah, 22, his friend Rakib, 19, and Iqbal Pandit, 36.

Narayanganj CID ASP Harun Or Rashid said that the case investigation found that the girl was raped after being abducted. “Three people, including her alleged boyfriend Abdullah, have been charged in the case.”

Meanwhile, in the absence of Khalilur Rahman’s involvement in the incident, it has been recommended that he be dropped from the case, he added.

According to Investigating Officer Ataur Rahman of the CID, on July 4, Abdullah left the girl abandoned at an isolated place after raping her there. The next morning, the girl sought help from rickshaw driver Iqbal Pandit to take her home. However,  he lured her to his home where he raped her and held her captive until she was allowed to return home, more than a month later.

As for Abdullah's friend Rakib, he was charged with attempted rape. Meanwhile, Khalil was not found to be involved in the case.

Following a case filed at Narayanganj Sadar Model police station over the abduction of a teenage girl, police arrested three suspects and sent them to jail.

The trio made confessional statements to the effect that they had thrown the girl's body in the Shitalakhya River after raping and murdering her.

On August 23, however, the girl’s safe return home immediately invalidated the confessional statements and raised questions about how the false confessions of the rape and murder had been obtained.

Later, a probe report revealed that it was Narayanganj Sadar Model police station SI Shamim Al-Mamun who tortured the accused and forced them to confess to crimes they had not committed.

On August 25, Abdul Haik, inspector (operations) of the same police station was appointed as the new investigating officer in the case.

Currently, Abdullah and Rakib are out on bail and Iqbal Pandit is in jail. A case has been filed with the High Court against Shamim Al Mamun after he was suspended from duty.
