Update : 28 Jun 2017, 01:38 PM
A giraffe at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur has given birth to two beautiful calves this month. The giraffe gave birth to a female calf on June 13 and a male calf on Saturday, Wildlife Inspector Anisur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune. The arrival of the newborns has been a consolation for the partk's officials, who lost two adult giraffes to a disease last month. The calves appear healthy and are running around all day in the giraffe enclosure. The mother is suckling them from time to time and the park authorities are feeding them other food as well. The newborns and the mother have been kept under constant supervision of a veterinary doctor and are being provided additional nutritional supplements outside of their regular diet of vegetables, grass and grains, Anisur said.Baby Giraffe1 One of the baby giraffes with the mother The park's Wildlife Supervisor Sarwar Hossain said giraffes reach sexual maturity at the age of three to five years and have a gestation period of about 14-15 months. Newborn calves weigh about 50kg, while adults can weigh from anything between 700 and 1,000kg. Sarwar said 12 giraffes were introduced to the park between 2013 and 2015, but four of them died of illnesses in the last two years. With this birth, there are now 10 giraffes in the park. Meanwhile, the Central Disease Investigation Laboratory at the Department of Livestock has found that the giraffes that died in May had a Clostridium infection. Safari Park's doctor Nizam Uddin Chowdhury said the bacteria spread in wet environments and herbivores were particularly vulnerable to them. Preventive measures can stop the infection, he said.
