A lion and a lioness recently bit each other after going berserk while mating in an enclosure at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Cox’s Bazar, both sustaining injuries in the process.
The lion, “Samrat”, is recovering after being treated, but “Nodi”, the lioness, is withering and could die at any moment, said park In-Charge Livestock Officer Dr Suvon Nondi.
While Samrat sustained minor injuries, Nodi was critically injured in the fight, according to park sources.
Nodi’s drooling has become excessive, and her food intake has almost stopped, making her scrawny.
The safari park has formed a four-member medical board in the slim hope of nursing the lioness back to health.
Earlier, a 22-year-old lion at the park named “Shohel” died of old age.
The park is currently home to two other lions – “Russel” and “Tumpa”.
Lions in captivity live to an average age of 25 years, while the life expectancy of a lion living in the wild is only 12-16 years, according to the National Geographic Society.
