Residents of Sylhet city have been facing an acute crisis of water supply ever since the citywide power failure that took place after a fire broke out at the Kumargaon Power Station in Sadar upazila Tuesday morning.
The sudden crisis has forced people to collect water from waterbodies inside the city, including the local ponds and the Surma River. Locals were seen gathering on the banks of the Surma River Tuesday night, collecting water in bottles, buckets, and drums.
Basic tasks such as cooking and going to the bathroom became problematic following the blackout, leading citizens to wonder when the power may return.
Meanwhile, workers and engineers of the power department have been working non-stop to repair the power transformer at Kumargaon substation.
A senior official of the Rural Electrification Board informed that it may be possible to turn on the power supply partially by Wednesday evening with one of the power transformers. “Another transformer is being brought from Gazipur, and will take a day or two to install. After that, the power supply in Sylhet will return to normal.”
A fire broke out at the Kumargaon Power Station in Sylhet around 11:15am on Tuesday. Fire Service and Civil Defence brought the fire under control around 12:30pm. No casualties reported in the incident.
