SI Akbar confesses to torturing Rayhan in custody along with other cops

Suspended police sub-inspector Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, the prime accused of the custodial death of Rayhan Ahmed, has confessed to torturing the victim along with the other accused of the case.

Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Syed Shamim confirmed the matter on Tuesday.

He said: “Although Akbar did not confess to killing Rayhan in custody, he acknowledged his involvement along with the other accused in the torture of the victim, which eventually led to his death.”

Akbar also stated in his statement that he and the other accused took Rayhan to a hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, added the APP.

Suspended sub-inspector Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, prime accused of the custodial death of Rayhan Ahmed, was sent to jail on Tuesday on completion of his seven-day remand.

The SI was produced before the court of Sylhet Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Abul Kashem, which ordered him to be sent to Sylhet Central Jail, said APP Syed Shamim. 

Earlier on November 9, Akbar was apprehended by members of a local Khashia community in India while he was trying to flee via bordering Companiganj in Sylhet, according to sources.

Akbar, the Bandar Bazar police outpost officer, was suspended following the death of Rayhan Ahmed in police custody in Sylhet on October 11.

On October 11, at around 3am, Rayhan was taken to the Bandar Bazar outpost of  Sylhet’s Kotwali police station and tortured to death by a few police officers, including Akbar.
