At least 10 people, including two journalists, were injured during clashes between law enforcers and encroachers at a Cox's Bazar sea beach on Saturday.
The incident occurred at around 4:30 pm when a team of the district administration, led by Cox's Bazar Development Authority Secretary Abu Zafar Rashed, moved to remove illegally built structures at Sugandha point of the beach, said Pankaj Barua, additional superintendent of police (Cox’s Bazar Sadar circle)
Among the injured, three were identified as Nurul Karim, district correspondent of Jamuna Television, Cox’s Bazar Sadar Police station Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Munir Ul Gias and a local journalist named Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury.
The encroachers started hurling brickbats as soon as the authorities began the eviction drive. Police in response fired teargas shells to disperse the encroachers, the official added.
On October 1, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court cleared the legal tangle and asked the Cox's Bazar district administration to free the beach from encroachers and remove structures made illegally.
