A man has been hacked to death for protesting the harassment of his niece in Magura.
The incident which has created unrest and agitation there, occurred in the district's Doribila village of Sreepur upazila on Tuesday morning.
The 45 year old farmer, Mashiur Rahman, died on his way to the hospital after being brutally injured in an attack, reportedly by supporters of the former chairman of Srikol Union Parishad.
As many as 20 houses were vandalized and looted in the area following the murder incident.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Sreepur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC), Ali Ahmed Masud, said: "Efforts are underway to arrest those responsible for the murder. More police has been deployed in the area to prevent further conflict.
"The body of the deceased has been sent to the morgue for autopsy."
Contacted, Latifa Begum, wife of the deceased, said: "There has been a long running dispute between the supporters of current Srikol Union Parishad Chairman Mutasim Billah Sangram and former chairman of the same union parishad, Qutbullah Kutir.
"My husband, Mashiur Rahman was a supporter of the present chairman. And for this, his opponents had been harassing and assaulting him for a long time.
"For quite some time, Shihab, a supporter of the former chairman, had been harassing Mashiur's niece. At one point my husband and his cousin Dollar Miah protested this, which led to a quarrel with Muktar Hossain, one of the former chairman's men. At that time, Muktar threatened my husband. Then on Tuesday morning, Mashiur was hacked to death by his opponents when they found him alone."
