Following the incident, the men wanted to wash the car but couldn't as police arrived on scene

Update : 03 Oct 2020, 03:40 PM

Three of the accused, who on Friday confessed to gang-raping a woman at Murari Chand (MC) College premises in Sylhet, said they attempted to destroy any and all evidence of rape after they committed the heinous crime.

On the night of September 25, multiple perpetrators including the trio ambushed a young couple in front of the MC College main gate and gang-raped the woman inside her car after confining her husband inside the college hostel.

Following the incident, the men wanted to wash the car and destroy any and all evidence of rape but were unable to do so as they had to flee the scene immediately when police and some locals came barging in.

Such information comes to light from the confessional statements given in court by the trio—Saifur Rahman, Arjun Lashkar, and Robiul Islam, and the statement of the officer of Shah Paran police who retrieved the evidence following the incident.

Shah Paran police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Shohel Rana, who retrieved the evidence, said if he had not gone there immediately at the time, the accused in the case would have destroyed the evidence. He collected the evidence immediately and found weapons in Saifur’s room.

Saifur, Arjun, and Robiul pleaded guilty when they were produced before the Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate's Court at 3pm Friday after a five-day remand.

Arjun Laskar, the fourth accused in the case, testified first in the court of Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman. His statement was recorded from 3:30pm to 6:30pm. The key accused Saifur Rahman testified next and his statement was recorded until 10:30pm.

Another accused, Robiul gave his statement before Judge Md Saifur Rahman of Metropolitan Magistrate Court-2.

After all three gave their statements, they were sent back to jail around 11:15pm, confirmed Amullya Kumar Chowdhury, assistant commissioner (prosecution) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.

Saifur’s statement

In his confessional statement, Saifur said he knew the wife as they are both from the same village but didn’t know the husband.

The car, where the woman was raped, was parked in front of the main gate of MC College. One of the accused, Tarek drove the car to the college hostel. At that time Saifur and Arjun were in the car. Later Shah Roni joined them on a motorcycle, according to Saifur.

They drove the car in front of room 105 of the college hostel. They confined the husband in the hostel and then took turns in raping the girl in the car.

The room 105 was allocated to Mahfuzur Rahman, another accused in the case. However, Saifur actually used the room.

In his statement, Saifur confessed that the local weapons which were recovered from the room belonged to him.

Saifur’s statement was similar to the statement of the husband in the case files.

According to the case files, the husband said he had stopped at the front gate of MC College to buy some cigarettes. At that time, the accused in the case started teasing his wife. Later the accused drove the couple to the college hostel where they committed the heinous crime.

The husband of the victim filed the case on September 25 with Shah Poran police station accusing the six named and 2-3 unnamed men.
