The Bangladesh Awami League nominee, Salma Akter Shimu, has been elected mayor of Tangail's Mirzapur municipality.
She is the wife of late mayor Shahadat Hossain Sumon.
District election and returning officer AHM Kamrul Hasan declared Salma as mayor without contest in the Mirzapur by-polls at around 10 am on Tuesday.
Salma Akter Shimu has expressed her happiness and gratitude to all her followers, well-wishers and leaders of the party, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Officials from the district administration along with local Member of Parliament (MP) Ekkabar Hossain congratulated her on her triumph.
The newly declared municipal mayor sought people’s blessings so that she could complete her husband’s unfinished work.
The mayor’s post fell vacant on February 11 following the death of Shahadat Hossain Sumon at a hospital in Dhaka.
