Mirzapur ASI dismissed over robbery on moving bus

ASI Atikuzzaman was accused of neglecting his duties, which led to his temporary dismissal

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Md Atikuzzaman of Mirzapur Police Station, Tangail, has been dismissed following a robbery and sexual harassment incident involving female passengers on a moving bus travelling from Dhaka to Rajshahi.

Tangail's superintendent of police, Md Mizanur Rahman, dismissed him on Saturday morning.

Earlier, on Friday, he was transferred from Mirzapur Police Station to the police lines in Tangail.

HM Mahbub Rezwan, assistant superintendent of police (Mirzapur circle), confirmed the matter, saying: "ASI Atikuzzaman was accused of neglecting his duties, which led to his temporary dismissal."

According to police sources, the incident took place on Monday night on the Dhaka-Tangail highway, where a robbery and sexual harassment occurred on a moving bus. The following morning, passengers reported the incident to the Mirzapur Police.

At the time, ASI Atikuzzaman was on duty at the police station. Victims accused him of not communicating properly with the passengers.

Following the case filed by one of the affected passengers, Omar Ali, the police superintendent held a press conference on Saturday morning, announcing the arrest of three individuals.

In a related incident, on Friday, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sirajul Islam of Natore's Baraiagram Police Station was removed from his position and attached to the District Police Headquarters.

It is notable that three days after the incident on the Dhaka-Tangail highway, a case was filed by passenger Omar Ali, naming several unknown individuals as defendants.
