A Jessore court has granted a four-day remand to eight teenage inmates of Jessore Juvenile Correctional Centre for interrogation over the death of three fellow inmates at that institution earlier this month.
Jessore Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge TM Abu Musa passed the order after a lengthy hearing on Thursday.
Case Investigation Officer (IO) Inspector Md Rakibuzzaman and plaintiff’s attorney Mostafa Humaiyun Kabir confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
IO Rakibuzzaman said he had moved the court seeking the teenagers’ custody for eight days on August 20.
Attorney Humayun Kabir said: “The case investigation officer had requested an 8-day remand for the teenagers’ questioning, but the court granted a 4-day remand after the hearing.”
On August 13, juvie officers inflicted excruciating torture on a number of youths of the centre, leaving three of them dead and 15 injured.
The deceased were identified as Parvez Hasan Rabbi, Rasel alias Sujon, and Nayeem Hossain.
Police rescued the injured and admitted them to Jessore General Hospital.
Following the incident, two committees were formed by the police and Social Services Department to probe into the killing of these three boys.
On August 15, a police investigation found five juvenile correctional officers responsible for torturing the teenage boys to death.
The five correctional officials are: Abdullah Al Masud, the superintendent of the correction centre; Masum Billah, assistant superintendent; Mushfiq Ahmed, probation officer; Shahnur Rahman, physical instructor; and Faruk Hossain, technical instructor.
The next day, seven juvenile inmates were arrested for their suspected involvement in a case filed over the deaths.
