Authorities are yet to find the masterminds behind the murder of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Executive Engineer Delwar Hossain more than two months after the incident. On top of that, the late engineer’s family members are passing their days in fear after receiving threats from unknown people.
In a press briefing on Saturday, Delwar’s wife Khodeza Akhter expressed her frustration over the slow progress of the investigation.
In the briefing held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), she demanded the investigation be handed over to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
Meanwhile, the slain engineer’s colleagues formed a human chain in front of IEB demanding an immediate and proper investigation to find the masterminds behind the gruesome murder.
Delwar Hossain was an executive engineer of the Konabari zone of GCC. Police recovered his body on May 12 from the Beribadh area under Turag police station in the capital.
Police arrested three people, including one of Delwar’s junior colleagues, in May in connection with the murder. They later admitted their involvement in the killing to the police.
Anisur Rahman Selim, an assistant engineer of GCC, was the last to confess before a magistrate on May 27, saying that he was the one who planned the murder. Selim also told the police and admitted to the court that he killed Delwar only because he scolded him.
However, Delwar's wife Khodeza said: “We do not believe that Selim killed my husband only because he was rebuked.”
“There might be some influential people behind the murder.”
“It is the responsibility of the police to solve the case and find the masterminds quickly but their investigation is moving at a sluggish pace,” Khodeza added.
She said she received threats from unknown people who told them not to move further with the case, and not to blame anyone other than the three who have been arrested.
Khodeza said they believe influential people may have been involved in the murder, which is why she requested the inspector general of police to handover the case to PBI.
