Readymade garments (RMG) workers from multiple factories blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for four hours after a female worker was killed being hit by a garbage truck of the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) in the Kunia area of the city on Saturday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Monira, 30, wife of Ruhul Amin, resident of Talitakandi village of Shariatpur district. She was a worker of the Lease Complex Garment Factory in the area.

The accident took place around 7:45am.

Angered by the accident, the agitated workers vandalized several vehicles and set the garbage truck on fire.

The body was recovered and sent to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue, said Gacha police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shah Alam, confirming the matter.

Witnesses and locals reported that the worker, en route to her office in the Kunia area of Gazipur metropolis around 8:15am, encountered the accident while crossing the highway.

Upon hearing the news, workers from nearby factories gathered and blocked the highway protesting the accident.

The agitated crowd resorted to throwing bricks and stones, damaging 10-15 vehicles, and setting the city corporation's truck on fire.

Police and traffic police arrived at the scene to control the situation. They managed to clear the road around 12pm.

The vehicular movement on the highway remains suspended for around four hours.

Traffic movement is now normal on the highway, said the OC Shah Alam.
