Physician Iqbal Mahmud, who was picked up by unidentified people from Dhaka last year, has been found alive in Lakshmipur seven months later.Dr Iqbal with his family members Dr Iqbal with his family members“Miscreants dropped him on the Dhaka-Raipur road around 11:30pm on Wednesday,” his father AKM Nurul Alam told reporters. “He is currently at home,” Alam said Thursday. Dr Iqbal said that he had been picked up blindfolded and released in the same way. “They used to keep me blindfolded round the clock. But they did not quiz me… did not torture me.” On October 14, 2016, Dr Iqbal was allegedly picked up by plainclothes police from Dhanmondi’s Science Laboratory area.
A video footage showed a van, bearing a logo similar to Dhaka Metropolitan Police emblem with identifiable trademark police lights, was trailing the unmarked van. Then a highly placed source confirmed the Dhaka Tribune that Dr Iqbal had been picked up on suspicion of his alleged involvement with militancy. Dr Iqbal’s father Nurul Alam sought Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s attention in finding his son, claiming that reports of his son’s involvement in militancy were false. The apex court also issued a ruling, asking the authorities concerned why the inactivity of law enforcement agencies in rescuing Iqbal should not be deemed as negligence of duty. Dr Iqbal told reporters Thursday that he had been given food during the detention. “I had no problem with the foods. I am a Tabligh follower. I was happy with whatever they gave me to eat.” The physician also wondered why he had not been questioned. “No, they did not torture me,” he said in response to queries by reporters. “They did not answer when I asked them about the reason why I was detained. They used to keep mum. One of them asked me to keep silence.”
