Police have rescued a schoolgirl 27 days after she was allegedly abducted in Basail upazila of Tangail and arrested the main accused, content creator Emon Mia, 23.
Emon was sent to jail by a court on Tuesday.
Earlier, in the early hours of Monday, Dakshinkhan Police conducted a raid at a house in the Kosai Bari area of Dhaka and rescued the girl. Emon was also arrested during the operation.
Emon, a resident of Kalia Madhyapara in Kauljani union under Basail upazila, is the son of Idris Ali Mia. He gained popularity by creating videos for social media.
His father Idris Ali Mia, mother Nazma Begum and elder sister Sabina Akter have also been named as accused in the abduction case. They are currently absconding.
According to the case statement and the victim's family, Emon had allegedly harassed the schoolgirl while she was travelling to and from school. Although the matter was reported to his family, they allegedly took no action.
The case alleges that on August 4, while the girl was on her way to school, Emon abducted her near Basail Sahapara Bridge with the assistance of his father, mother and sister, and forced her into an unidentified vehicle.
The incident was reported to Basail Police Station, after which police launched efforts to rescue the girl. On August 10, a case was filed naming Emon as the principal accused, along with three other named suspects and one unidentified person.
Following the case, police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) launched operations to rescue the girl and arrest the accused. Dakshinkhan Police eventually rescued her and arrested Emon, the main accused.
Locals have alleged that Emon is an active member of a juvenile gang and has been involved in harassing female students and women in the tourist area of Basulia, as well as in clashes in different areas. Some locals also alleged that he is addicted to drugs and involved in drug trafficking. However, police could not immediately be reached for comment on these allegations.
Basail Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Alamgir Kabir said Dakshinkhan Police rescued the abducted schoolgirl and arrested Emon, the main accused in the case.
“They were later handed over to Basail Police. Emon was sent to jail by a court on Tuesday afternoon, while the girl was sent to court for a medical examination and for her statement to be recorded. Efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused,” he said.
